Polarmetrics’ vIRtuous analyzer is based on proven FTIR spectroscopy. Honey and Maple Syrup Analysis

Anyone in the honey industry; small bee keepers, distributors, governmental agencies and large food companies are aware of the problem of adulteration with low cost syrups. Syrups such as cane, corn, inverted beet, tapioca and rice are very difficult to detect in honey. Expensive instrumentation and complicated analysis by well-trained specialists are required to find these adulterants. The vIRtuous Honey Analyzer incorporates easy-to-use software and heated sampling interface calibrated to differentiate these syrups. Analysis consists of applying one drop of sample onto the sampling well and clicking the “Analyze” button. In order to discourage the business of adulterating honey, distributors, large consumers (retailers and food companies) and governmental agencies need to routinely test honey for purity. Choosing not to test the honey leaves the market open to the unscrupulous suppliers. By testing honey, suspect suppliers can be identified and reported, while honest suppliers can be accredited. Adulteration can now be discouraged or eliminated if the industry is willing to self-police.

Trans Fat Analysis

In 2010 the AOCS released the new official measurement method (Cd 14e-09) for determination of total isolated trans fat replacing the tedious and time consuming GC method (Ce 1h-05) for both low and high levels of trans fat measurements. The Polarmetrics vIRtuous Trans Fat Analyzer provides rapid determination of isolated trans fat in oil and fat products and is engineered to fully comply with AOCS Cd-14e-09. With a preloaded trans fat calibration analyzing oils is as easy as placing a sample on the heated ATR and pushing a button. Preset calibrations save time and frustration associated with complicated calibration development. The vIRtuous eliminates the time, preparation and high cost associated with gas chromatography. The vIRtuous analyzer also eliminates the need for consumables which saves both money and instrument down time. The analyzer comes pre-calibrated from 0 – 20% trans, has a MDL of < 0.25 wt% and comes with three sets of certified reference standards.

Olive Oil Analysis

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) adulteration with less expensive oils is rampant in the industry. The vIRtuous analyzer easily detects and quantifies corn, sunflower, canola and hazelnut oils in EVOO in a matter of minutes. Additional oils can easily be added to the calibration when necessary. Acidity levels in various grades of olive oils are quantifiable and the vIRtuous grades olive oils (extra virgin, virgin and pure) based on these acid levels. If the blenders, bottlers and major consumers were to utilize the vIRtuous to routinely test olive oil the practice of olive oil adulteration would be severely discouraged.
